B.Sc. Water Resources Management and Agro-Meteorology
Programme Overview
The Water Resources Management and Agro-Meteorology programme at the University of Agriculture, Science and Technology, Ihugh (UAST) consists of a comprehensive undergraduate education in the sustainable management of water resources, climate systems, and their applications to agriculture, food security, environmental sustainability, and climate resilience. For students in the programme, a core learning objective is building and demonstrating foundational competencies in hydrology, agro-meteorology, climate science, GIS and remote sensing, hydroinformatics, precision irrigation, drought monitoring, watershed management, and climate adaptation through the successful completion of rigorous coursework, laboratory investigations, field studies, and a capstone research project. Students are also eligible for accelerated professional pathways, including postgraduate research, industry leadership, environmental consultancy, and entrepreneurial ventures in the water and climate sectors.
Programme Distinctiveness
A Curriculum Benchmark Internationally
The UAST Water Resources Management and Agro-Meteorology curriculum is benchmarked against leading water and climate programmes at institutions including Wageningen University & Research, University of California-Davis, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Colorado State University, and University of Reading, while addressing water security, climate resilience, and sustainable agricultural development challenges specific to Nigeria and Africa.
A Programme Rooted in National Priorities
While maintaining international standards, the programme equips graduates to address Nigeria's most pressing water and climate challenges: water scarcity and food security, climate change adaptation in agriculture, precision irrigation and water use efficiency, drought monitoring and early warning, watershed degradation and restoration, water governance and policy, smart water infrastructure, and climate risk analytics.
Integrated with National Academic Standards
The programme is structured around the National Universities Commission (NUC) Core Curriculum and Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS), with a distinctive 30% UAST proprietary component that substantially strengthens competencies in applied GIS and remote sensing for water resources, hydrological data analysis and visualization, climate observation and environmental instrumentation, programming for hydroinformatics, precision irrigation systems, hydroinformatics and decision support systems, agricultural drought monitoring and early warning, artificial intelligence in agro-meteorology, watershed management and ecosystem restoration, integrated water resources management, climate risk analytics and adaptation planning, water policy governance and international water law, smart water infrastructure and Internet of Things, and professional practice and consultancy.
